“Know Your Rights” – A Quick Guide by the ACLU

know-your-rights

Whether documented or undocumented, we all have certain rights protecting us from uncomfortable situations with a variety of government agencies.  Being informed about these rights will help guide any person if stopped by law enforcement.  The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has provided a quick guide to certain rights to keep in mind if stopped by law enforcement or immigration official.  It is very important to remember to remain calm and listen to the officer before responding.  A person’s well-being and safety is always a first priority.

Here are some of the excerpts from the ACLU website:

“You have the right to remain silent.  You do not have to answer questions about where you were born, whether you’re a U.S. citizen, or how you entered the country.”  This applies generally to local and state law enforcement.  However, “if a federal immigration agent requests your immigration papers, you must show them.”

“If you are stopped by local law enforcement, stop the car in a safe place as quickly as possible…upon request, show the police officer your driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance.”

“Both the driver and the passenger have the right to remain silent.  if you are a passenger, you can ask if you’re free to leave.  If yes, silently leave.”
